Professor Mohamad Abdalla is Director of the Centre for Islamic Thought and Education at the University of South Australia. He is one of Australia’s most prominent and respected Muslim leaders, combining the roles of an academic scholar, public intellectual, community leader and commentator.
Dr Abdullah Sahin is Reader in Islamic Education at the University of Warwick. His work focuses on Muslim identity, youth development, and educational approaches to counter extremism through faith-based critical thinking and reflective religious learning.

The dates of the conference are Sunday 5th to Wednesday 8th October 2025. Please note that the evening of Sunday, 5th October is the Welcome Dinner. The learning tracks for the conference will commence on Monday, 6th October, insha’Allah.

Reawakening Our Collective Strength and Drawing from Our Timeless Islamic Tradition
Tajdīd as a concept has passed the test of time and was able to renew for the ummah, its din, or aspects of its din (such as education / schooling) in times of extreme challenges and changes.
This year’s conference invites educators, Islamic scholars, school leaders, and innovators to embark on a shared quest for renewal—a journey to reawaken our collective strength and draw from the timeless values of tajdīd or the renewal of Islamic schooling. We are not here to merely adapt to the current educational landscape; we are here to shape it—drawing from our tradition to confront challenges, offer solutions, and as a healing for education, all while steadfastly advancing our own immutable purpose and aspirations with confidence and clarity.
This conference is not just about inspiration—it is about action. It is an opportunity to move from personal awakening to collective impact, where renewal becomes a lived reality that shapes the future of Islamic schooling both locally and globally.
The conference will offer a space for deep reflection, meaningful dialogue, and collaborative action. Through dynamic keynotes, interactive workshops, and thought-provoking panels, participants will be challenged to disrupt the status quo, re-center on foundational principles, and illuminate pathways toward meaningful transformation. Together, we will explore how tajdīd – renewal can inspire change —within ourselves, our schools, and our communities.
